Johnny Angel

After a ship captain disappears along with his entire crew, his son tries to unravel the mystery.  On the plus side, there are some well shot sequences and a few very exciting ones, including some great fight choreography.  Also you’ve got Hoagy Carmichael in a quirky supporting role as “Celestial O’Brien” the resourceful cabbie.  Other than that, it’s all thoroughly average.  George Raft never clicked with me, I just didn’t care about him.  Signe Hasso’s nervous little lamb routine got tiresome.  Claire Trevor seems to phone it in as the femme fatale.  But most of all, it was just kinda boring.  Nothing much seems to happen, we don’t learn much about anyone.  It’s almost made up for by the ending, but even that doesn’t quite satisfy, as it feels like they didn’t lay enough groundwork for it.  Watchable but easily forgettable.  Rating: 6
