Pilgrimage

Posted by martinteller on December 18, 2012

Herzog’s brief, wordless (except for an allegedly invented quote in the intro) doc shows devotees in Russia and Mexico, journeying to some religious icon.  Many of them do this on their knees, a practice that appears to be not only wearying but excruciatingly painful.  Not to be Annoying Atheist Guy, but it all looks pretty silly to me.  When they arrive at their destination, they look more cautiously hopeful than rapturous.  But I guess if your god is enough of a dickhead to make you crawl to get to him, he’s not gonna guarantee anything when you arrive.

Mildly interesting for Herzog completists, but I can’t think of a reason why anyone else should bother.  Rating: Poor (57)

I’m now imagining you, on a whim inexplicable even to yourself, doing a theme month of religious-themed films, growing increasing weary and disgusted as the films themselves are increasingly pious in nature, until everything receives scathing reviews and a rating in the ‘Crap’ range or worse.
